Joining the Annual Birmingham Pilgrimage to Lourdes as a nurse provides an opportunity to do something completely different – and to make a real difference.
Away from the constraints of the National Health Service and normal working life, the Pilgrimage allows time to be with people, both Accueil Pilgrims and fellow volunteers.

The current nursing team is very diverse and includes very experienced nurses with wide ranges of experience including ITU, practice nursing, midwifery, nursing managers, nurse lecturers and nurse practitioners all based in both community and hospital settings.

The type of care we give in Lourdes really is back-to-basics including assistance with ADL’s, wound care, medication administration, nutritional assistance including PEG and JEJ feeding, basic assessments and first aid. As you can see, as a Nurse on our Pilgrimage, you do not need specialist training, all nurses from all backgrounds are welcome and much appreciated. As part of your application we ask you what specific skills you have and that is purely so that we can ensure that as a team have the competence to give good quality care to our Accueil Pilgrims, particularly those with complex care needs.

In order for you to work as a nurse on our Pilgrimage to Lourdes we will confirm your current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) is also required for all helpers on the pilgrimage including nurses.

In addition to trained Nurses we welcome Carers who assist the nursing team with the above tasks. Our current carer team (pictured above wearing white) consists of health care assistants, nursing associates, paramedics, nursing students, medical students, retired nurses, Occupational Therapists, teachers and many more.

Essential training you must obtain as a nurse/carer in Lourdes includes Manual Handling and Basic CPR. If these are not skills you currently have we ask that you attend our training days where we will provide updates in these.

We would love to expand our team and are VERY interested in hearing from other medical professionals, for example paramedics, physiotherapists or pharmacists.
